The Kaiafas lake is located in the Peloponnese, in the regional unit of Ilia. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Zacharo. The lake is located by the sea and it has also thermal water. It was formed in 6th BC. a century from major earthquakes that hit the area.
Today the lake covers after its consolidation an area of about 1500 acres. It has a length of 3 km, a width of 500-600 meters, and a depth of over 2 meters. The Caiaphas Lake constitutes a united pristine and primitive ecosystem and is considered perhaps the only one in the world.
