The gorge of Vouraikos starts 3 km north of the village of Kato Zachlorou at an altitude of 730 meters and continues parallel to the river, traveling a distance of 20 kilometers to reach the village of Diakopto (Municipality of Egialia, Achaea, Peloponnese), a journey of one hour.
Torrential waterfalls, caves with stalactites and stalagmites, the rich alternating vegetation of plane trees, firs, olives, and oleanders make a landscape of primitive beauty unique in Greece.
On the vertical walls of the gorge very interesting and rare plant communities of unique species, characteristic of the rocky habitats of the eastern Mediterranea n are preserved, such as the rock bell Campanula Versicolor, the aromatic Teucrium pollium, and the small fern Ceterach officinarum.
The Vouraikos river originates in Helmos mountain, near the village of Priolithos, and flows into Diakopto. It has a length of 40 km, half of which are located in the gorge. The river transforms according to the season and the time.
