Egio (or Aigio) is the second-largest city of the Region Unit of Achaea and the seat of the Municipality of Aigialeia. It is amphitheatrically built on a hill of 60 meters high overlooking the Corinthian Gulf.
A special feature of the city of Aigio is the green, central Square of Ypsila Alonia with the neo-Gothic Tower (1900) - formerly Meteorological Station and the Hero sculpture, work of G. Dimitriadis the Athenian.
In Aigio, there are many remarkable neoclassical preserved buildings such as the “Megaro Panagiotopoulos” (1857-1860) with magnificent frescoes inside - a great example of neoclassical architecture in Southwestern Greece, the “Archaeological Museum (1890)” of the architect Tsilikaros, the “Historical and Folklore Museum”, the “mansion of Georgios S. Messinezis” etc. Impressive are, also, the old raisin warehouses that have now been turned into luxury cafes and the old paper mill which is an industrial monument.
Finally, the coastline of Aigialeia has many beaches of crystal clear water. Indicatively, we could mention the blue flag awarded beach of Alyki-near the homonymous lagoon. Also known beaches of Aigio are the pebble beach of Lampiri, the beach of Loggos with the popular bars, the cosmopolitan beach of Selianitika with the summer cinema and the beach of Akoli or Abythos with the deep crystal water.
