Temple of Apollo Epicurius

The temple of Apollo Epicurius is located in Vasse of Figalia in the regional unit of Ilia. It is one of the most important and imposing temples of antiquity. The temple rises at 1,130 meters, in the center of the Peloponnese, on the mountains between Ilia, Arcadia and Messinia, 14 km south of Andritsaina. The temple was built in the second half of the 5th century BC. (420-410 BC) and is attributed to Iktinos, the architect of the Parthenon. The monument is one of the best-preserved of classical antiquity, it was the first in Greece to be declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The temple was dedicated by the Figalis to Apollo because it helped them overcome a plague epidemic. This unique monument summarizes in its structure all the architectural knowledge of the Greek culture.
